On 24th June Saddam Rana and Shahbez Rana, the two brothers of BSP MLA Shahnawaz Rana, were remanded in 14-day judicial custody in connection with an attempt to rape two Delhi girls. Saddam and Shahbez were arrested from their hideout in Muzaffarnagar late on Friday night.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to their crime, police said, adding that seven persons had been arrested in the case. “After the recovery of the articles used in the crime, we produced them (Saddam and Shahbez) before the ACJM II court in Muzaffarnagar. The defense counsel opposed the police demand but the court remanded the two brothers in 14-day judicial custody,” said Civil Lines Police SHO Sanjay Vajpayee.

Earlier, the UP Police had announced a reward of Rs 5,000 each on Saddam and Shahbez, who were on run following the police crackdown. They used the vehicles of the MLA in the crime. The police are looking into all angles carefully, added the SHO.

The police conducted a raid on the MLA’s residential premises in Muzaffarnagar on Friday, but to no avail. However, in the late night raids on their hideouts, police succeeded in arresting the two accused brothers of the Bijnor MLA. “The prime suspect who drove the girls in Pajero was non-other than the BSP MLA’s brother who was deeply bitten by one of the girls in bid to release herself from his captivity. They have confessed to their crimes,” added the SHO.

Other accused persons — Dilshad (driver), Masroor, Raqib, Narendra and Zarar — have already been arrested. Narendra and Zarar are the Government-provided security officers of the MLA. On their confession, the two brothers of the MLA were found involved in the crime, police said. Hunts are on to arrest more accused in the crime, said the police officer.

UP Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday announced the suspension of the MLA from the primary membership of the party.
